"BLOOD AND THUNDER" is an excellent launching pad for beginner collectors and fans of pulp. I did'nt have that much information on the subject but after reading BLOOD AND THUNDER I was well informed. I especially liked the format and organization of the book!All in all 4 out of 5. Excellent for fans of old school pulp

I actually acquired this book at a Pulp Con and read it cover to cover. The first chapter is "Pulp Collecting 101," which even if you aren't a collector, provides basic information about pulp fiction magazines. It then proceeds to cover the top magazines of the day and then has chapters for each of the major genres. He even has a chapter on notable books about the pulps -- but I highly recommend this book for sound footing in navigating this topic. Ed Hulse knows well about what he speaks!
This is one of the top five books written about pulp magazines. What I really liked about it is his discussion of collecting pulp magazines - which ones were worth more and why. The book is also very well-written (which is problem with many other pulp books).
This book is available from the editor/publisher Ed Hulse, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in popular culture or the history of fiction magazines. Pulp magazines once were the main fiction reading source for millions during the 1910-1950 period. They continue into the present day in a different format such as original paperback novels and digest science fiction and mystery magazines. In addition to discussing many of the major pulp magazines this book reprints hundreds of cover photographs in black and white. The book covers not only the magazines but the editors, writers and the stories. A major study of an important subject and not academic at all. This book in highly enjoyable and fun to read. After reading, you will be interested in collecting the magazines and reading the stories which are available in a wide variety of reprints.
This is an excellent introduction to the various genres represented in the pulps.
The author really knows his stuff. He also puts out a terrific magazine on the topic. Well worth getting hold of those as well.
