This was a reread for me. I believe I originally read this book sometime during middle school and I remembered that I really liked it. I read a bunch of the Dear America and Royal Diaries books but I would always get them from my school library. Now I’m going to try to buy the ones I liked so I can relive my childhood.Reading this now as an adult is such a different experience, but I still enjoyed it.
The author did an amazing job imagining what a young Elizabeth I would be like. There was a nice blend of innocence and tragedy to her character.
I also really liked the little tidbits about life at court, like how often they took baths (spoiler alert: it’s not very often).
Overall, this is a great middle grade book for kids who want to learn more about Elizabeth I.

it was perfect.
Nice little book. A Diary type. Pleasantly surprised by its contents.
I have always been fascinated by Henry the VIII and English history and as a child read extensively thru Scholastic books about many many famous people when they were young and helped form their future selves
This book is VERY well written and holds your attention and you really do want to know more...
well it was a good buy and my gf loved adding it to her collection
This is written for pre teens girls and is careful to cover a fairly short period of Elizabeth' Tudor's life. It is therefore accurate in presenting her on again off again relationship with her father, Henry 8th of England. My granddaughter read it at school and it has fired an interest in history which I hope to encourage. They are written in modern prose and skirt the dangerous territory of putting modern ideas into period heads. These books are hard to come by, but seem worthwhile reading for this age group.
I bought this entire set for my nieces. My mom grew up with these books and in her stead I ordered this entire set. These stories are all about women roll models and strong women through history. I would definitely recommend the stories. As for the condition…the book was not in the greatest condition. It had obviously been loved and most likely in a child’s library. All in all these are great stories and I would definitely recommend them!!!!
For some time I searched for a fictional account of Elizabeth's childhood that didn't involve all the gore and misery (a rarity, I know). I had forgotten all about this installment in The Royal Diaries until I was searching for the ones I never got a chance to read in my childhood.
Although I do like my historical fiction with a little more splendor, this was a perfect addition to my Tudor fiction collection.
In my opinion I've always imagined the child Elizabeth as she's depicted here, as I imagine all of Henry's children were growing up really; both in fear and admiration of the "terrible Tudor", and yet yearning for even the slightest hint of affection, whether it be a simple compliment or a wink. Elizabeth seems to be torn between the fact that the man everyone seems to adore is basically her mother's killer and the fact he's the only parent she has left. Although Kat is in her life, there really is no substitution for one's real mother.
To be honest, I was initially worried when I first purchased this. I hadn't read a Royal Diaries book since I was in the sixth grade and couldn't remember how in detail they were. Would Anne Boleyn have been beheaded and said beheading thereafter be riddled with rumours for weeks, or would we hear a few 'flowery' sentences about "my mother's execution" and then be off the subject? I happily was not disappointed. Some more intimate and gruesome things are sidestepped and/or made non-explicit (these are children's books after all, historical though they may be.)
I also like that both Mary and Anne were described as "not quite right in the head." I'm sure Henry's treatment of Mary and her mother as well as the way Anne acted towards her undoubtedly made her a bit "not quite right"; the same goes for Anne. Considering all she went through in life (losing Percy, the pushing from her family, being pursued by Henry, the need to produce an heir, must I go on?) surely made her a bit "not quite right" as well, rather than the viper tongued, power hungry villainess everyone loves to make her out to be.
This really is an excellent addition to anybody's Tudor library, and a good way to start out young adults on fiction about one of the strongest women to ever live.
