Fire Dance The Harp and Ring Sequence #2 Ilana C Myer 9780765378323 Books
This novel is superbly written. Its prose is lush and lyrical, its evocation of an exotic fantasy culture richly detailed. The characters' inner lives are depicted with equal skill and subtlety. Myer is capable of capturing, by turns, the sense of nostalgia in an old friendship revisited in middle age and the heady blush of a new friendship taking shape during the flower of youth; she captures the heartbreaks of betrayal, the seething grudges of wounded souls and oppressed cultures, and weaves them all together in a complex tapestry of narrative.
Myer also is adept at the slow revelations of a multifacted mystery, making FIRE DANCE a genuine page-turner. Adding to the suspense is her knack for capturing moments of horror and darkness as well as scenes of beauty and majesty. Like a master painter, she works with a broadly varied palette, one capable of showing the truths of love and war, friendship and enmity, nobility and villainy.
FIRE DANCE is a spectacular follow-up to Myer's first novel, LAST SONG BEFORE NIGHT, and one that fans of elegantly crafted fantasy will not want to miss.

A beautifully written sequel to Last Song Before Night, this novel is another example of why Ilana C. Myer is my favorite fantasy author. I hope she continues to write many books for many years to come!
Although, the narrative was flowing rather sluggishly at a few places, the second installment of the series definitely showed clear improvements; now the tale is in full swing. Cant wait to see how the author will wrap up the storyline. It is just frustrating that it will take until 2020...
I very rarely write book reviews, but I also very rarely read literature of this calibre. This is complex, interesting fantasy set in an interesting world, peopled with interesting characters and perhaps most uniquely, written in achingly beautiful prose. It is rare that I find myself having to read slowly just to luxuriate in a turn of phrase; a thought-provoking metaphor or simply to enjoy the cadence and poetry of a sentence, but I did it all the time with this book. I enjoyed the first book in this series, too; I am looking forward to the next. One minor point about the description of the novel on ; this is not a standalone book; there will clearly need to be a sequel to resolve some major plot points. It is true that you don't have to have read the first book in the series to enjoy this one, and that one certainly *is* a standalone novel, but it is worth reading it before you read this one; it will deepen your appreciation of the story and characters immensely.
"Fire Dance", the sequel to Ilana C. Myer's "Last Song Before Night", is easily as beautiful and lush as its predecessor. Myer's worldbuilding continues to be extraordinary she has constructed a complex and colorful world quite unlike the typical pseudo-medieval Europe one sees in so many fantasy novels. The world of "Fire Dance" is one in which poetry and music have real, tangible power and consequences, and in its variety of cultures, traditions, and religious faiths is a much better mirror of the complexities of human society than are many other examples of the genre. Myer's characters - from Lin Amaristoth, the main protagonist of both novels, on down - are skillfully drawn, gracefully portrayed, and act with real human motivation and emotion.
"Fire Dance" is, I think, destined to be one of the great fantasies of the year, and Myer one of our best authors in the genre.
There are books referred to as "cozy reads" or "beach reads" that capture a certain set of reading behaviors and pleasures. There are books that are meant for easy and idle page turning on a sunny afternoon where the reader lightly grazes the text and devours the story in casual sips and swallows. This is NOT that kind of book. This is a book that readers will open like a chest discovered in a corner of the attic or washed up on the beach. Inside? Silks and gems, strange but alluring hints of incense, letters scrawled on parchment that whisper of secrets and betrayals. A treasure trove of things both exotic and familiar, touched with magic and hinting at stories we were unaware existed. That's the kind of book this is.
Set years later in the same world as her debut novel, Last Song Before Night, Ilana Myer's second story weaves an intricate plot of magic, politics and power. Lin, the Court Poet of Eivar, carefully balances her power and intrigue in her new role--while keeping dark secrets and her own passions tightly guarded. In an effort to save a kingdom from an mysterious and brutal enemy, she will journey far from her homeland, determined to uncover answers. But answers are not so simple to come by. A woven tapestry of intrigue, betrayal, secrets and scandal await her and will not easily let her go again. Lin knows she is living on borrowed time, and the careful dance between life and death is never more urgent than now.
So many of our central characters are poets and musicians, thus it is no surprise that the story itself is a glowing tapestry of storytelling--a sense of poetry and music writ large in the landscape. This is the kind of book you read and savor, not just rush through heedlessly to find out what happened. I confess, I'm a very fast reader, but even I slowed down and took my time to linger over sentences . This high fantasy read challenges the reader to partner with the story and step into it fully. To discover what's going on and consider all the details and small touches. Our characters are complex, each has their own motivations and faults. The choices to be made in this story are never clear-cut, and far from a simple battle of good vs. evil, this story will often upend what we expect, providing clues that what seems good may not be, and that evil is never far.
To be honest, I'd have to say that this book surpasses the author's first tale. It demonstrates a greater maturity and understanding of character, with a blossoming love for setting and story that's becoming very deft indeed. While readers certainly don't have to read the first book to enjoy this one, those who have read Last Song Before Night will get to see what's become of the world and the characters since we left them. My only small critique may be that occasionally I found the names too similar for a few characters and it took a little puzzling occasionally, but it is a small thing in the overall text. Now I'm just waiting to see what happens in the next book.
