I really LOVED this book! I think its really something special, a classic of it's kind & can't believe it isn't far more well known than it is! This is a beautiful story, & for me it worked on so many levels. From one standpoint it is a heroic fantasy, mythic & larger than life, a battle between Good & Evil, the Triumph of Love. On another level its an action packed adventure story. On yet another level it's the star-crossed love story of two teenage boys.

The teenage boys are Ash (Ashleigh) Trine & Kieran Trevarde, who find each other in the most terrible of circumstances. They could not be more different, but forced to trust & rely on each other to survive, they become friends & begin to fall in love. Its a love that will have transformative power over their lives. Through it they will heal what is broken in each other. It will give them strength & determination to survive, to fight, to never give up even when things seem hopeless.

The love story of Kieran & Ash was so moving to me: It was angsty, tender & endearing, funny at times, heartbreaking at others. The sex scenes were not graphic, but very tender & sweet. Just that would be more than enough, but then it evolved into something much bigger, a Great Love, more powerful than evil or death.

I felt (still feel) such enormous affection for the two main characters, Ash & Kieran. Especially for Ash, especially Ash, who evolved into someone truly beautiful by the end. I loved the way both characters changed & grew during the story. Their experiences were a trial-by-fire, which changed them from boys who were fragile, helpless & scared (Ash) or tough but damaged, angry & self-hating (Kieran), into strong, courageous young men ready to go up against truly terrifying forces, all for each other. They learned to trust one another, to draw strength from their love. By the end they were still two teenaged boys in love, yet at the same time had been transformed into these larger-than-life awe-inspiring heroic figures, who were able to accomplish the seemingly impossible & change their world.

I also really liked the rather bizarre supporting character, Chaiel, who was at turns tragic & heartbreaking, then hilariously funny, but by the end, moving & courageous.

Villains were appropriately dark & villainous, but not completely cardboard. There was some exposition of their backgrounds & motiviations, and glimpses from their POV. One of them was even revealed as rather tragic in the end.

Other things I liked were how the world/setting was so eclectic & "outside the box". Some reviewers felt this was problematic, contradictory or improbable, but I loved it. For example, to a large degree the setting feels like the American Wild West, desert, gunfights, robber gangs, horses, trains, a marginalized native population with a tribal culture & history markedly similar to that of the Native Americans. Yet the dialogue is very modern: Profane, slangy, sarcastic & cheekily disrespectful to authority figures & villains (including actual Gods), which delighted me. Then there are the Gods themselves who, with their multiple incarnations, remind me of the Hindu pantheon.

Favorite scenes: There is one powerful heartbreaker of a scene, a scene of grief. It follows a very long, desperate struggle where one character goes to extraordinary, heart-wrenching lengths to save this person's life, and when it isn't enough, the enormity of the other character's grief, the outpouring of anguish was just - wow! Shook the foundations of the world. It may sound melodramatic, but that's exactly the way that kind of grief feels. You'll know the one I mean when you read it.

One thing to note: If you want to buy the book, it's only available as a paperback or in epub format. It's still available for free on the author's website too. I wanted buy it, but wanted to read on my Kindle, so I bought the epub version (for Nook) & tried to convert to mobi (for Kindle), as there were some websites that claimed to be able to do that. But it didn't work. Ultimately, I ended up getting the free version & through a painstaking process, turning it into a pdf, which I then was able to send to my Kindle. I also later purchased the paperback version as well, because this is a book I definitely want to keep in my "forever" library.

My final thought: This book is awesome & needs to be promoted!

Positives Highly engaging and well written. The plot concerns two young men of different backgrounds, who are suffering from persecution by a totalitarian theocracy because of their modest magical powers; as they help one another survive, they also enrich one another psychologically and discover new strengths, physical, emotional, and magical. The fantasy setting is reminiscent of a 19th century forced colonization of the North American West. The authors provides rich descriptions of the setting and the internal lives of the characters, and there is a good deal of action as well. The main characters are reasonably complex and have sufficient psychological validity. The themes of the book are developed meaningfully and include psychological and physical trauma, homosexual romance, friendship, the subjugation and genocide of native tribes, the abuse of religion and industry by the state, use and abuse of science, incarceration, survival in the wilderness, magic, and divinity, among others.
Negatives/Other There are occasional typos and mild anachronisms. One of the main characters, in particular, sometimes uses concepts that he should not have been exposed to given his background and education. His degree of trauma and personal history are also somewhat inconsistent with his capacity for investment in a meaningful relationship. Readers who are familiar with the writing of Lynn Flewelling and Carole Cummings will find similarities between the characters and themes in heir books and in The God Eater, but The God Eaters is much better written (it is simply better literature with better plots and characters) and, if I am not mistaken, The God Eaters was written and published around 2006, which was before these other authors' similar books came out (circa 2010).
Conclusion Even though a cheaper E-book is not available, the paperback is totally wroth the money and the wait to be printed and delivered.
