Future Threat is a great continuation to an exciting series. The story picks up with Elena trying to move on from what had happened during and after their first time travel but isn't doing too well with that. She's also still finding it hard to let go completely and trust in the love between her and Adam. And while I wasn't a complete fan of Adam in the first book, I did grow to like him and he's not too bad in this one either.

Things get even more complex for the three remaining travelers when Aether comes out of the shadows to round them up. Although I guessed something else was going on with that rescue mission and wasn't too surprised when things took a turn for the worse, I had no idea the story would play out the way it did and was truly thrown by that ending.

Aside from the alternate futures and changing events, I liked the fact that Elizabeth kept the story pretty fast-paced. There's literally no time to lag because every second counts and if any is wasted, there's a huge chance mistakes could not be corrected.

Living up to the excitement of the previous book, Future Threat keeps the intrigue going with the allure of seeing yourself years ahead and by the mystery of who the "villain" is that is causing things to turn ugly for each character. I also love how it almost seemed like they had to make a choice of who would be saved or which future they'd want for themselves. Such an interesting story. I'm definitely looking forward to the conclusion and what Elizabeth does next with these characters.
It’s been six months since Elena Martinez has returned from her trip to the future, courtesy of Aether Corporation, and she’s having panic attacks and nightmares. Not everything went well, her budding relationship with Adam O’Neill is progressing, but she still can’t completely shake off her trust issues. Recently, Elena has noticed a black car that seems to be following her, she’s positive it’s from Aether, and her fears are confirmed when, just as she was going out with Adam, they’re both asked to come to the Aether offices. It can’t be good, and it’s even worse than Elena thought, because Elena and Adam, along with their friends from the first mission, have all been tricked into participating in another mission the voyagers from the latest mission are missing!

I had been waiting for FUTURE THREAT since I had turned the last page from book one, FUTURE SHOCK, which had been one of my favourite books from 2016. My expectations were beyond sky-high, and believe it or not, they were met tenfold! FUTURE THREAT is phenomenal! The new characters are just as fabulous as our old friends, they all have their own voice, the cast is multiethnic, which is so refreshing and not one stereotype in sight. I loved Elena even more the second time around I identify with her, I want to be her! She is loyal, eager to act, and will do what it takes to succeed, even at her own peril. Elena Martinez has become my favourite fictional heroine. For those who had missed the amazing first book, fear not, you will be able to follow with a problem, as Ms. Briggs recaps succinctly and clearly what happened previously, but I would recommend you treat yourself to FUTURE SHOCK nonetheless to enhance your reading experience, because these types of books seldom happen.

The time travel aspect is even more riveting in FUTURE THREAT, as Elena and her friends go back again thirty years into the future. Not everything is exactly the same, and again Elizabeth Briggs nailed everything. The action starts early on, and sit tight for the ride of your life! The dialogues are spot-on, the action breathtaking, the writing seamless; the author becomes invisible and morphs with Elena. I just cannot believe how creative Ms. Briggs is, and I think her numerous plot twists would keep some authors in business for years. Ms. Briggs’ storytelling skills are such that never attempted to guess where it was all going, because I would have been wrong every single time. A bit past the halfway mark, I thought I would burst with excitement because, in my wildest dreams, I couldn’t have possibly wished myself what happened. Yet, amidst the death, the destruction, and the bitter deceptions, beautiful relationships bloom.

I am not precisely a lover of time travel stories, because I always feel something is off, but Ms. Briggs demonstrates her absolute mastery of the trope FUTURE THREAT is the best time travel novel I have ever read, bar none! And there will be a third book! Be still my heart!

It has been six months since the Aether Corporation sent Team Delta into the Future with a mission to bring back information on technology. Six months since the team discovered that, upon their return, they’d all be killed by one of their own. And six months since Elena Martinez stopped the real murderer and saved herself plus two other members of her team, while unfortunately losing two.

Elena is not dealing with the present very well. On the surface her life seems perfect she’s going to school, living in her own apartment, and in a steady relationship with Adam. But inside, she’s still dealing with what happened six months ago. She’s filled with guilt over the loss of her two friends, and she’s still horrified at the murder she had to commit to keep the rest of them alive. She’s just waiting for Adam to leave her–like everyone else in her life—so she pushes him away. Plus, Aether has been keeping tabs on the three survivors, and Elena can’t figure out why.

Well, as it soon comes out, Aether needs the remaining team to head back to the future in order to save another team gone missing. Once there Elena, Adam, and Chris discover there’s more going on than a simple extraction of missing persons. This time around, the team discovers just how much their actions (or inactions) can affect the world.

Future Threat hit its stride as far as tackling the whole time-travel concept. It expanded so much on what was started in Future Shock and added so many layers and possibilities. I would say none of the concepts were completely shocking but the way Elizabeth Briggs presents the timeline is clear and easily accessible to those who are maybe less familiar with time-travel reading.

The feeling of the ticking clock is amped up in Future Threat as the group has less time to find the other team. In the first book, they were in the future for 24 hours. Here there’s only a hand-full, so this limited time frame really drives the story forward and makes it easy to read through very quickly.

I’d say the only issue I had was, unfortunately, with Elena. Who, when not being the smart-thinking woman we know her to be, was berating herself for having failed everyone by not being able to predict the future (ha ha). I grew tired of it very quickly. And the fact that this causes her to push Adam away kept me from being able to care about their relationship, which is a problem because a lot in the story revolves around their relationship.

As stated above, I really liked the way Elizabeth Briggs handles the future timeline. Expanding upon this is the idea/message that all of our actions have reactions or consequences. The smallest change in one timeline can have a major effect on another. I loved that these ideas were introduced in this book and I look forward to seeing how these are further built upon in the last installment in the trilogy. I loved that this story has a clear ending, no cliffhangers, but you can definitely see where the conflicts might crop up next.
