My wife says the Bureau isn’t watching me. She says there aren’t cameras in my contact lenses. No microphone in the ‘vitamin pill’ they made me swallow on the submarine into Tokyo.
She says I’m paranoid. That I should get off the couch, and find a job. But there’s a glowing number in the bottom-right corner of my vision. And each time I move, each time I yawn, or slouch, or laugh too loudly, the number ticks upwards.
My wife says the Bureau isn’t watching me.
She would say that. She works for them.
Plunge into Patenting Peter, a psychological sci-fi thriller.

Patenting Peter eBook Jason Werbeloff Reviews
Great spin on the future of our humanity!! Of course it will come down to movement tax!! Who wants the freedoms of spontaneity? Definitely not the government!! Wonderful read!!
Another great story set in the bubble universe. This one is a little more light-hearted than the previous stories, even with a seriously disturbing look at technology and government surveillance. From the beginning you want to cheer for the main character, but it's definitely one of those stories where you cringe at every bad decision made. Definitely an entertaining read.
Original story that I could not put down. Movement is life, but in this dystopian world, movement has negative costs. Paranoia, dancing, festivals, and great character development. Fantastic, satisfying, and quick read.
To say that I adore Mr. Werbeloff would be a vast understatement. I personally believe that everybody should have a bit of Werbeloff in their lives! This story is on my list of favorites from this author. Poor Peter. I actually had tears in my eyes at the end of this shorty. I hope Lizard eyes was smooshed by a dysfunctional cab. As always, I'd recommend this story and author.
4.5 stars. Another great short story set in the world of The Bubble. There is plenty to like about this tale - an amusing, sardonic and surprisingly sympathetic main character, a worthy and rather enigmatic adversary and a little bit of the art of Salsa. I really enjoyed the expansion of the Bubble world to another location with it's own customs and quirks and I hope the author continues to explore and share the workings of this realm.
Patenting Peter is well written. And the story just flows from the beginning to the end. And the ending is never what you imagined. I love Jason Werbeloff's stories. He's an excellent writer. All his characters are unique and personable.
In Patenting Peter, Peter is trying to grab the attention of his wife and his antics in doing so are humorous. But in the end, Peter got more than what he wished for.
The latest trip to the Bubble takes us to the Tokyo Bubble, where things are different, even by Bubble standards. Peter accompanied his wife to Tokyo when she accepted a significant position. However, Peter's position became that of a bored husband, struggling for relevance and increasingly provoking his wife for attention, to no avail. The short story builds as Peter ventures out of his building and explores his new environs. He's running up their bill since his every movement is taxed, and he's sure she is monitoring him, but he gets no response.
As with all of Jason Werbeloff's works, you will find yourself increasing amazed and intrigued by the breadth of his imagination. This time, there is no dark horror underlying the story, just a highly entertaining journey to other parts of the Bubble. The ending is brilliant!
Very well done.
