Vida’s work is new to me, and I was very happy to snag this download at a reduced price. Another first: I don’t think I’ve read a novel that featured second-person perspective before. At first it felt distracting, but after a little while this choice of perspective made sense. I was able to immerse myself into the main character’s story and experience it with her. Vida skillfully handles second-person narration in a way that feels precise.

I don’t know if I would categorize this novel as a mystery or a thriller, as some reviewers have said. There is a shot of panic at the beginning, but losing her passport in a third-world country turns out to have been the start of an unlikely adventure. If there is a mystery, it’s simply the reader’s question of what drove the main character to Morocco in the first place. When these pieces of the puzzle settle into place, more of the story makes sense. I think of it as more of a thoughtful, finding yourself type of narrative. The next time I travel I'll be thinking about how nobody around me knows who I really am, and how simple it would be to fade into some other story...

Many readers would be turned off by the ending of the story. I won’t spoil it for you, but I’ll say it doesn’t tie up nicely and neatly. The adventure continues past the ending of the novel. If an unclear resolution doesn’t upset you, and you’re intrigued with the idea of a character to tries on and sheds a succession of identities, pick this one up!

The Diver Clothes Lie Empty Vendela Vida 9781443409742 Books Reviews

I loved this quirky, original book. At first I wasn't sure where the novel was heading. A woman loses her passport, backpack, and everything on arriving in Casablanca after tipping the taxi driver $20. I thought, "What an idiot," but soon understood that the book was heading in an unpredictable rather mad direction, bursting with a self-depreciating sense of humor and full of funny twists and turns. This is a character-driven story and I would say it is NOT a "literary thriller" at all. A shame it is being described that way. Maybe why many readers are giving it one star? This book has many laugh-out-loud moments, or at least it did for me. I fear many of the one-star reviewers may take life too seriously and have never experimented with being a free spirit.

If you think women should behave "sensibly" then this is not the book for you. Do you appreciate a zany character who acts on impulse at every turn? I actually identified with the protagonist and lived vicariously through her Moroccan adventure. She is on a spiritual journey with nothing to lose (as you find out later in the book the WHY of many of her rather feckless, irresponsible choices).

Even the second person narrative did not put me off. I will be searching for more books by this author and glad one of my book club members chose it as otherwise I may not have found this little gem of a book.
Like many of the other reviewers, I found the story line very compelling. I’ve traveled abroad for decades in unusual places and, when I read the jacket description, thought it sounded like a great read!
Writing in the second-person sometimes works…sometimes doesn’t. In this case…it worked for me until the middle of the book and then it became a distraction. The other distraction for me was that a famous actress is being alluded to but not named. After the fifth time the author referred to her as ‘…the famous American actress’ , I began to wish the author had simply given her a name. It is, after all, fiction.
Lastly, I was disappointed with the ending of the book as I had expected much more. It almost seemed as if the author ran out of story, couldn’t bluff it any more and ended it.
This is a stunning book. I bought it because it was recommended for a course that I am about to do. When I started it, I was unsure because it is written in second person and I had never read anything from that POV that was any good. But, Ms. Vida pulls it off very successfully.

The story is set in Casablanca in Morocco and its subject is identity. The protagonist loses her passport and identifying documents and has to navigate a foreign city without credit or ID. The story builds slowly towards its heartbreaking reveal as the unnamed main character deals with a cast of characters who she does not know and does not name.

Ms. Vida examines the question of identity and appearance in this novel and how these two things impact our present and future. How would any of us cope if we were forced to be anonymous and to live by our wits?

The back cover blurb says it is funny. There are some humorous portraits of characters but I would not say this was a comic book. It is much better than that, it is really moving. The use of second person starts to make complete sense in the second third of the book. The title poem is well used and, after my initial doubts faded, I really appreciated the writer’s skill in drawing a character who barely knew herself, let alone allowed the reader to “see” her.

You will have to read the book to understand what it must be like to be someone from whom almost everything has been taken, not just ID and credit. I hope this book gets the accolades it deserves. All writers should read it. I think it will influence me greatly in my own work. There are a lot of books being published right now. This is one you should read, if you care about contemporary writing and ideas.
I found it very impressive.
